7 Signs of a Failing Evaporator Coil in Your AC

A central air conditioner can still turn on, blow air, and make its usual sounds while a serious problem develops inside the indoor unit. That is why the signs of failing evaporator coil trouble are often mistaken for a thermostat issue, a dirty filter, or a system that simply needs more refrigerant. The evaporator coil is the indoor component that absorbs heat from your home or building’s air. In other cases, investing in a complete system replacement can provide better long-term value.

The decision depends on more than the immediate repair price. An older system with repeated refrigerant leaks, declining efficiency, and a worn compressor may not be a strong candidate for a major coil repair. On the other hand, a newer system with a covered coil and otherwise healthy components may be worth repairing. What to Do When You Suspect Coil Trouble

Start with the basics: check that the filter is clean, confirm that return grilles and supply vents are open, and make sure the thermostat is set to Cool. Do not keep lowering the thermostat setting in an attempt to force colder air. That can make a frozen-coil situation worse.

If you see ice, turn the cooling system off and allow it to thaw before service. If water is leaking near electrical equipment or through a ceiling, shut the system down and treat it as an urgent repair issue.
